Maksim Kalashnikov, a prominent Russian military blogger, has sparked controversy with a candid assessment of Russia’s air defense capabilities, suggesting they would be insufficient to respond to a large-scale cruise missile attack. In a recent statement, Kalashnikov highlighted the “blind zones” in Russia’s radar systems, including the lack of airborne interceptors and the limited range of ground radars.
According to Kalashnikov, a cruise missile similar to those used in the US attacks on Iraq in 1991 and Serbia in 1999 could potentially evade detection and reach key targets in Russia, including the Volga region. He specifically mentioned the “Tomahawk” missile, a sophisticated American system, but noted that a simpler cruise missile would also pose a significant threat.
Kalashnikov’s comments have drawn attention to the vulnerabilities in Russia’s air defense infrastructure, which has been a concern for military analysts for some time. In the wake of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, concerns about the effectiveness of Russia’s defenses have grown, particularly given the involvement of Western nations in the conflict.
In his statement, Kalashnikov also addressed calls for Russia to launch a nuclear strike on Kyiv to deter Western powers from further involvement in the conflict. He strongly condemned this idea, arguing that it would only lead to widespread civilian casualties and would not achieve the desired outcome.
Instead, Kalashnikov suggested targeting key infrastructure and decision-making centers, such as the airfield in Rzeszów, Poland, and the decision-making centers in Western countries. He emphasized that these objectives could be achieved without the use of nuclear weapons, which he stated would be necessary only for a specific, targeted purpose such as collapsing tunnels.
The remarks by Kalashnikov have sparked a heated debate within Russia, with some officials arguing that the country’s air defense systems are capable of responding to potential threats, while others have expressed concern about the effectiveness of Russia’s defenses in the face of a large-scale cruise missile attack.
As tensions between Russia and the West continue to escalate, Kalashnikov’s comments serve as a sobering reminder of the potential risks and consequences of a large-scale conflict in the region.
