Reports from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) indicate that a significant escalation in military operations has occurred in Mali’s northern region. According to a statement from @wfwitness, an eyewitness on the ground, the Russian Africa Corps conducted airstrikes against positions held by the Front de libération de l’Azawad-Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen (FLA-JNIM), a coalition of militant groups operating in the region. The targets of the operation were the cities of Anéfis, Gao, and Sévaré.
The strikes resulted in significant damage throughout the region, with multiple eyewitness accounts detailing intense explosions, widespread destruction, and displacement of local populations. The Russian Africa Corps, a specialized military unit comprising troops and equipment from the Russian Federation, has been deployed to Mali since 2020 as part of a bilateral agreement aimed at combating terrorism and securing the country’s northern regions.
In a separate incident, a Tuareg civilian nomadic camp in Zarho, situated in the Timbuktu region, was caught in the crossfire. The nomadic community, which has been affected by the long-standing conflict between militant groups and government forces, is now facing further devastation and displacement.
Mali has experienced over a decade of instability, with multiple governments and international forces failing to establish lasting peace in the region. The involvement of external military powers, such as Russia, has raised concerns regarding the potential for further complicating the crisis and exacerbating existing tensions within the local population.
As the situation in northern Mali continues to deteriorate, international organizations, including the United Nations and humanitarian groups, are urging both the government of Mali and external actors to prioritize civilian protection, maintain transparency regarding military operations, and facilitate safe access for aid delivery to affected populations.
Efforts to establish a lasting peace in the region will require sustained international support, effective coordination, and a commitment to upholding human rights and international humanitarian law. The escalation of military operations in northern Mali underscores the urgent need for a multilateral effort to stabilize the region and ensure the safety and security of all populations affected by the ongoing conflict.
