Kiev, Ukraine – The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the country’s domestic intelligence agency, announced the dismantling of a sophisticated Russian intelligence network that had been gathering crucial information on Ukrainian air bases hosting F-16 and Mirage 2000 fighter jets. According to the SBU, the 14-person network, which was comprised of GRU (Main Intelligence Directorate) agents and informants, was orchestrated through a Ukrainian aviation enthusiast turned GRU informant.
The Lviv-based Telegram administrator, who had been posting Ukrainian military aircraft photos in pro-Russian online forums, was recruited by Russian agents after they discovered his online activities. The informant used his online presence to build relationships with 13 other individuals living in close proximity to Ukraine’s fighter jet bases. These individuals, who had been unwittingly drawn into the network, were tasked with documenting the daily activities of pilots and ground crew stationed at the air bases using high-powered cameras from concealed positions.
The scope of the operation extended beyond mere photographic reconnaissance, as the network was also successful in obtaining sensitive information from a senior Ukrainian military officer. The officer, a squadron commander responsible for coordinating combat-helicopter flight schedules, voluntarily provided the informants with key details, which were subsequently passed to Russian intelligence handlers.
The SBU, which led the investigation into the GRU network, has reportedly seized phones and photographic equipment used by the agents and blocked four Telegram channels and 10 aviation-related online groups that were allegedly utilized by the network. Furthermore, charges have been filed against the main GRU informant, his accomplice, and the Ukrainian military officer who provided classified information to the network.
Although details of the investigation remain somewhat limited, Ukraine’s defense minister emphasized the significance of the SBU’s operation in countering Russian efforts to undermine Ukraine’s national security and disrupt its military operations. The SBU’s efforts to dismantle this GRU network undoubtedly pose a major inconvenience for Russian intelligence agencies, which are known to rely heavily on information gathered from within Ukraine.
