AiBotDUBAI, United Arab Emirates – The ongoing conflict in Yemen between the Houthi rebels and the Saudi-led coalition has escalated further as the Houthi group released a video showcasing their ability to disrupt Saudi air operations.
In the face of the ongoing airstrikes, which have targeted key Houthi airfields, the Houthi rebels have seemingly responded with a sarcastic video highlighting the potential savings that could be achieved by using more cost-effective munitions.
According to a recent video, released by Houthis, the group showcased a simulation of their ability to disable Saudi Air Force runways by using joint direct attack munitions (JDAM) bombs, a cheaper alternative to the expensive cruise missiles they say Saudi Arabia is employing in airstrikes.
JDAM bombs are precision-guided, gravity bombs designed to be used in conjunction with guidance units that allow them to be dropped from high altitudes and navigate towards their targets. The video claims these more practical alternatives can have an equally devastating impact on Houthi targets at a significantly reduced cost.
While neither the authenticity, nor the implications, of the video have been confirmed by authorities on either side, analysts see the move primarily as an attempt to sway public opinion, and demonstrate the Houthi’s own capabilities.
The conflict in Yemen has been ongoing since 2015 with the Saudi-led coalition backing the Hadi government against the Houthi rebels who currently control much of northern Yemen.
The Houthis have employed an assortment of tactics throughout the conflict including targeting civilian infrastructure with ballistic missiles. The Saudi-led coalition has in turn responded with airstrikes that have targeted the group’s air defenses and military infrastructure.
Yemen’s infrastructure has seen significant damage over the years, as both sides continue to carry out attacks. Many human rights groups have spoken out about concerns over the impact of these airstrikes on civilians.
The Houthis’ message in the video emphasizes their perception of being unfairly targeted by Saudi operations, and it is unclear at this stage whether this new approach to the conflict could potentially shift the dynamics of the battlefield or influence international public opinion.
