The Cambridge team, led by Dr. Anna Reid, set out to quantify the global production of ‘poo’, calculating that the average person produces around 0.35 kilograms of faeces per day. Using this figure, the researchers projected that the global output of human waste amounts to over 100 billion kilograms annually, with significant regional disparities.
The study found that Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia are home to the highest rates of faecal waste output, with the former producing approximately 20% of the global total. This is largely due to the large rural populations, limited access to sanitation facilities, and a lack of effective waste management infrastructure in these regions.
In contrast, countries such as the United States and Japan have lower average outputs, primarily due to the widespread adoption of modern sanitation systems and a greater emphasis on waste management practices.
