Mansour Al-Jamri, Bahrain News Agency’s Editor-in-Chief, stated that a nationwide siren system test took place in the country. This news is in contradiction to the Twitter post made by a Twitter user @witness, who stated Bahraini sirens have activated across the nation.
Bahrain has been at peace for a considerable amount of time in recent months, however it has a history of civil unrest that started in 2011. The island nation is a home to the US Navy’s 5th Fleet.
A Twitter user shared that, ‘the sirens are going off as we speak’. However, officials have yet to confirm the reason behind this siren activation. In recent months, the country has experienced a rise in COVID-19 cases. This increase of COVID-19 might explain why the sirens have been activated.
In a bid to contain the spread of COVID-19 and adhere to Bahraini Government rules, Bahrain’s COVID19 protocol may be the cause of the siren’s activation. On 26 February, Bahrain announced the re-implementing of mask mandates.
Bahrain has previously activated its air raid sirens during periods of war and heightened military activity.
In response to reports from Twitter user @witness, citizens and expatriates alike are advised to remain calm until official confirmation is released.
A Bahraini government official stated that ‘There is no reason to panic. If anything unusual occurred, you would be informed.’
