Brussels, Belgium – In a thrilling display of determination and skill, Senegal’s national soccer team took the lead over Belgium in their highly anticipated quarterfinals match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, held at the Roi Baudouin Stadium in Brussels, yesterday evening. The African champions stunned the heavily favored Belgian squad with their tactical strategy and individual brilliance, leaving fans and pundits alike in awe.
Senegal’s momentum began in the 35th minute when defender Ismail Jakobs found himself unmarked in the box, heading home a pinpoint accurate cross from his left back Abdou Diallo. Although Belgium’s attacking quartet, comprising of Michy Batshuayi, Yari Musetti, Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard, continued to create scoring opportunities, they were unable to capitalise on their chances.
In the second half, Belgian goalkeeper Simon Mignolet made an incredible save in the 61st minute as he denied a well-placed shot from Senegal’s star striker Sadio Mané. However, in the 73rd minute, Senegal capitalised on another Belgian slip-up, as their substitute player Ismaila Sarr seized an opportunity in the box to unleash a precise left-footed shot past Mignolet.
“We always knew it would not be easy against a team like Belgium, but the boys showed a lot of heart and resilience,” said Senegal’s head coach Aliou Cissé in a post-match press conference. “Their goal was a reward for our perseverance and commitment to the game plan.”
Belgian Coach Roberto Martinez expressed his concerns about the match saying his squad “did not take the game as seriously as they should have.” Martinez also commended Senegal saying that he was “impressed by their level of fitness and tactical sophistication.”
Senegal’s victory over a well-organised and highly skilled Belgian side has generated massive excitement and expectation for their remaining matches in the competition. Their triumph comes on the heels of other major upsets in this year’s tournament, where some of the pre-tournament favorites have either failed to deliver or suffered unexpected defeats.
Senegal will face either Spain or Costa Rica in the semi-finals, scheduled to take place at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid on the 9th of July.
