Global attention has been directed towards Washington, D.C. as the diplomatic fallout from a contentious description of certain African and Latin American countries by US President Donald Trump continues to intensify.
The term, made infamous by a private White House meeting, was leaked in a book authored by journalist Michael Wolff. The derogatory language, reportedly used by President Trump to describe Haiti and countries in Africa, has sparked widespread outrage among international leaders.
United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Marie-Glasspiegel reacted, stating her deep disappointment “at these dehumanizing and unacceptable remarks” that “contradict basic human values and principles of equality, respect and dignity.”
US Congressional leaders have also condemned the comments. The US Senate passed a symbolic resolution, urging respect and understanding among nations. Similarly, Republican and Democratic US lawmakers spoke out against the remark’s “shameful” description that “undermines American values.”
However, other notable nations have taken a slightly different stance. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his surprise at what he labeled an “unfortunate” choice of words, rather than an outright attack on his nation. Similarly, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto described the comments as an unfortunate reflection of Washington’s foreign policy and not a direct attack on his country.
On the other side of the diplomatic divide, Haitian and African Union representatives have denounced the US comments in even stronger terms. The African Union (AU) described them as a “clear example of racism and xenophobia.” A group of prominent Haitian politicians expressed their deep resentment towards the term used by Washington. US Haitian diplomats, along with their international counterparts, are working to mitigate the impact of these comments, and their implications for regional diplomacy.
The United States’ long-standing reputation for moral leadership and commitment to democracy has been challenged on an international platform like never before. In response, the international community is reevaluating the US’s role as a world leader, particularly in regards to their policies on immigration and relations with foreign nations.
A number of diplomatic efforts are underway to prevent potential escalation, including an upcoming diplomatic conference on international development to be attended by US and international delegates.
