Yemen’s crucial port city of Mokha was placed on high alert yesterday, with authorities announcing the suspension of all commercial and maritime operations following multiple missile attacks by Houthi forces in recent days. Director of the port declared that at least seven civilian casualties have been reported and estimated losses in excess of $16 million have been incurred, according to local authorities.
Mokha, situated on the Red Sea near the Bab el-Mandab Strait, plays a pivotal role in the maritime trade routes of the region. The strait, connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, serves as a strategic chokepoint for international shipping, facilitating the exchange of goods across continents. Control of the port lies with forces affiliated with Yemen’s internationally recognized government. The group allegedly launched six ballistic missiles targeting the port city of Mokha on Friday, leaving at least four civilians dead, with several establishments, including civilian, economic, and maritime facilities, facing substantial damage.
On the other hand, the Houthi group justified these military actions by asserting that their primary target was the gathering of Saudi-backed forces in the region, alongside their naval assets and arms depots in the port. Meanwhile, these escalating tensions have raised critical worries about a renewed large-scale conflict in Yemen.
