Seoul, South Korea – In a significant move to bolster its defense capabilities, the South Korean government has unveiled a major expansion of its drone and counter-drone programs aimed at countering the military threat posed by North Korea. According to an announcement made by Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back, the country will invest heavily in training a massive number of drone operators and deploying a large quantity of domestically produced drones by 2029.
As part of the ambitious plan, South Korea aims to train 500,000 “drone warriors” – a significant percentage of its total military personnel – to effectively utilize drones as a standard tool for individual soldiers. Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back emphasized the importance of drones in modern warfare, describing them as a “second personal weapon” that will become an integral part of soldiers’ arsenal.
The plan also involves the deployment of around 60,000 domestically produced drones, with a smaller batch of 11,000 expected to enter service by 2026. Moreover, the South Korean government has allocated funds for the procurement of over 20,000 low-cost expendable drones, which will further bolster its drone capabilities.
South Korea is also working to enhance its counter-drone capabilities by introducing AI-enabled drone swarms and loitering munitions. These cutting-edge technologies are expected to significantly enhance the country’s ability to detect, track, and neutralize enemy drones.
The country’s existing laser and high-power microwave counter-drone systems will be expanded to provide a comprehensive defense against various types of drone threats. Furthermore, the South Korean government has decided to accelerate procurement processes to strengthen its domestic drone industry, allowing it to produce high-quality drones with improved capabilities.
The expansion of South Korea’s drone capabilities is widely seen as a strategic move to counter the growing military threat from North Korea.
