Southern Command Deploys Additional Assets to Support Venezuela Earthquake Relief Efforts

Washington, D.C. – In response to a formal request for assistance from the interim Venezuelan authorities, the United States Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) is deploying additional military assets to support State Department-led earthquake relief operations in Venezuela.

According to a statement from SOUTHCOM, Commander General Francis L. Donovan has directed forces to support search-and-rescue teams, U.S. government personnel, and interagency partners involved in the relief efforts. The deployment aims to supplement existing efforts and provide critical assistance to those affected by the disaster.

The deployed assets will include the USS Fort Lauderdale, a US Navy amphibious transport dock, and the USS Billings, a guided-missile destroyer, both of which will provide maritime support and facilitate the transportation of aid and personnel. In addition to the naval assets, SOUTHCOM has also dispatched C-17 and C-130 transport aircraft, which will facilitate the rapid transportation of personnel, equipment, and supplies to affected areas.

Furthermore, the deployment includes reconnaissance platforms, designed to provide critical situational awareness and support the coordination of relief efforts, as well as rotary-wing aircraft, which will enable rapid response and transportation of personnel to remote areas.

This development follows a request from interim Venezuelan authorities for U.S. assistance in responding to the devastating earthquake that struck the country. The move is seen as a significant gesture of support from the United States government, which has a long history of providing humanitarian aid in times of crisis.

The deployment of U.S. military assets to support the relief efforts in Venezuela is a testament to the country’s commitment to providing humanitarian assistance to those in need, particularly in times of crisis. The U.S. government has already mobilized State Department-led teams, as well as interagency partners, to provide assistance to those affected by the disaster.

The U.S. military’s involvement in the relief efforts is expected to provide critical support to the Venezuelan people, who are facing significant challenges in the aftermath of the earthquake. The deployment is a demonstration of the U.S. government’s commitment to providing humanitarian aid and support to those in need, and underscores its willingness to work with governments and organizations to provide assistance in times of crisis.

As the relief efforts continue, the U.S. military’s involvement is expected to play a crucial role in supporting the recovery and reconstruction efforts in Venezuela.
