In a strongly worded statement, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned the recent surge in fighting in Sudan and called upon neighbouring countries to take immediate action to prevent the use of their territories as launching pads for attacks on Sudan. The statement comes as the situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate, with various armed groups vying for control of key cities and government institutions.
The Saudi Ministry’s statement was released on Wednesday, in which they emphasized the need for regional countries to work together to stabilize the situation in Sudan. “Neighbouring countries to Sudan must prevent the use of their territories as launching pads for attacks on Sudan,” the statement read. “This is essential to prevent further destabilization and protect the lives of civilians.”
The situation in Sudan has been worsening since last year, when long-time president Omar al-Bashir was ousted in a military coup. Since then, various factions have emerged, each with their own agenda and goals. Ethiopia, South Sudan, and the Central African Republic have all been accused of hosting Sudanese rebel groups, providing them with support and logistics to carry out attacks inside Sudan.
The Saudi statement comes in response to concerns that Sudan’s neighbours are not doing enough to prevent the use of their territories for attacks on Sudan. Diplomats from the region have been meeting in recent days to discuss ways to stabilise the situation in Sudan and prevent further bloodshed.
“We call upon all parties to refrain from using their territories to launch attacks on Sudan, and to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Government of Sudan,” the Saudi statement read. “We also urge the international community to provide support to the Sudanese government in their efforts to stabilise the situation and restore peace and security to the country.”
The situation in Sudan is seen as a major challenge for regional stability, with the risk of further escalation and the potential for the crisis to spill over into other countries in the region. Saudi Arabia, along with other regional powers, is seen as key to finding a solution to the crisis.
In recent years, Saudi Arabia has played a key role in mediating conflicts in the region, including in Yemen and Libya. However, critics have argued that Saudi Arabia’s approach has often prioritised the interests of other regional powers at the expense of the concerns of Sudan and other countries in the region.
As the situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate, the international community is watching developments closely. While it remains to be seen how effective Saudi Arabia’s calls for action will be, one thing is clear: the fate of Sudan hangs in the balance, and the world is watching anxiously.
