Eyewitnesses in the capital city Khartoum reported hearing the unmistakable sound of explosions and gunfire echoing across the city, as RSF drones targeted key infrastructure and government installations. The city’s Omdurman district, a hotbed of anti-government sentiment, was particularly hard hit, with multiple explosions reportedly occurring in the area.
Similar attacks were also reported in Atbara, a city located in the northeastern region of Sudan, which has a long history of anti-government protests and unrest. Al-Damir, a key agricultural hub in White Nile state, and El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state, were also among the targets.
Footage obtained by this publication appears to show a Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) air-defense system engaging and shooting down one of the RSF drones over the suburb of Omdurman. The video, which has been verified by military officials, shows a swift and decisive response from the SAF, whose quick action may have prevented further harm to civilians.
The RSF, a paramilitary force led by powerful warlord and former Janjaweed militia leader, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (also known as Hemedti), has long been accused of carrying out extrajudicial killings and human rights abuses in Sudan. Yesterday’s attacks have sparked widespread condemnation from international stakeholders and human rights organizations, who have called for urgent action to hold those responsible accountable.
As the situation continues to unfold, authorities have established a curfew and increased security measures in major cities across the country in an effort to maintain order and prevent further violence.
In reaction to the attacks, Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok called for restraint and urged the nation’s military to take swift action to restore stability and security. “We call on all parties to remain calm and to prioritize the safety and well-being of our citizens,” he stated in a televised address.
