SYRIAN DEMOCRATIC FORCES LEFT BEHIND LARGEST BOOBY-TRAP CACHE IN WAR-TORN SYRIA

In a recent operation, footage obtained by the witness group, @witnesswf, has exposed a significant and intricate network of booby-traps laid out by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) along the M4 highway in northern Syria. The extensive tunnel system dug under the strategic highway highlights the scale of preparations conducted by the SDF over several years.

According to footage captured inside the tunnel, dozens of improvised explosive devices have been laid out for detonation. These devices are part of what appears to be the largest booby-trap cache documented since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war, revealing a sophisticated and well-organized effort by the SDF.

The video footage provides an insightful look at the extensive tunnel network and the scale of SDF’s preparations, showcasing miles of underground passages and hidden explosive devices. The sheer extent of the SDF’s efforts in building and preparing these tunnels underscores the extent of logistical operations during the war.

Hundreds of kilometres of tunnels and hidden infrastructure have been uncovered during various military operations in northern Syria. While many parts of these networks have been destroyed or neutralized, they serve as a poignant reminder of the SDF’s military capabilities during the height of the conflict.

The footage suggests that the SDF had a comprehensive plan to lay out an intricate web of obstacles and booby-traps aimed at impeding enemy advances. The network appears to have been designed with multiple layers of defence, including improvised explosive devices and tunnels.

The collapse of the SDF’s territorial control in mid-January was swift and decisive, leading to widespread losses. It is reported that most of the SDF’s underground networks were abandoned following significant territorial losses.

Experts speculate that abandoned infrastructure like those uncovered may pose a threat to the security of the region, requiring careful de-mining operations to ensure the area is clear of hazardous materials.

This latest discovery highlights the ongoing challenges facing northern Syria as the conflict grinds towards a slow and complex resolution.
