Syrian Government Denies Reports of Large-Scale Demolitions and Evictions in Rural Homs

A growing number of sources appears to suggest that the Syrian government is undertaking a large-scale operation aimed at the demolition of residential houses and the forceful eviction of civilians residing in rural areas of Homs Province. While the Syrian authorities have thus far remained tight-lipped on the issue, various news outlets and human rights organizations have begun to confirm these reports.

According to ANF, a Kurdish-language newspaper, reports have emerged of riot-equipped police being deployed in rural Homs, sparking fears of widespread evictions and demolition of homes. The Syrian Human Rights Observatory (SHRO), a UK-based non-profit organization that monitors human rights abuses in Syria, has also corroborated these reports, suggesting that the targeted demolitions are aimed at clearing rural areas to make way for military operations or other government projects.

Twitter searches have also yielded results consistent with these reports, with photographs and eyewitness accounts posted on the platform suggesting large-scale demolition operations under way in rural Homs. One Twitter search, conducted using the Arabic hashtag المزرعة_حمص_شيعة (HamzaHomsShia), retrieved results in Arabic which appear to confirm the existence of an eviction operation in the area.

Despite the mounting evidence, the Syrian government has thus far denied any knowledge of the reported demolitions and evictions. However, the presence of riot police in the affected areas, as documented by ANF and SHRO, appears to contradict official denials.

Human rights experts warn that the reported operation could result in significant numbers of internally displaced persons (IDPs) or refugees, adding to the already substantial refugee crisis in Syria and surrounding countries. The operation also raises concerns about the long-term impact on local communities, many of whom have historically been subjected to forced evictions and displacement in the context of ongoing urbanization and development projects in Syria.

The international community has thus far expressed concern over reports of the Syrian government’s actions, with many calling for an immediate end to any eviction or demolition operations in rural Homs and other affected areas. Further investigation is clearly needed to fully understand the nature of these operations and the potential humanitarian consequences for civilians caught in their path.
