In the past few years, the small city of Zahlé has seen an influx of Syrian refugees fleeing the devastating conflict in their homeland. However, despite initial reservations, residents have come to view these newcomers as a valuable addition to the community, bringing with them cultural richness and economic benefits.
Located in the Bekaa Valley, Zahlé has long been a popular tourist destination for its picturesque setting and traditional architecture. However, as more Syrian families have made their way to the city, the residents have begun to see the positive impact that these refugees are having on the local community.
One of the primary reasons residents have adjusted to the influx is the cultural diversity that it has brought. Many of the Syrian refugees have brought with them unique skills, such as craftsmanship and entrepreneurship, which have enhanced the local economy.
“Since the arrival of the Syrian refugees, Zahlé has experienced a significant boost in small businesses and artisanal production,” states local resident and shop owner, Ghassan Khamis. “Their presence has not only injected new life into our economy but has also encouraged us to rediscover our own cultural heritage.”
In addition to the economic benefits, the refugees have also brought a unique cultural perspective to the city, enriching the daily lives of residents. Many refugees have shared stories of their experiences and customs, which have been met with great interest by the local community.
“We have learned so much about the Syrian culture through interacting with our new neighbors,” says Lina Saad, a resident of Zahlé. “Their resilience and resourcefulness in the face of extreme hardship have inspired us to appreciate the value of community and cooperation.”
The local government has taken steps to support the integration of Syrian refugees into the community. Programs aimed at promoting language skills, entrepreneurship, and vocational training have been implemented to help residents adapt to new skills and ways of life.
While there are still concerns regarding the challenges and costs associated with hosting refugees, many residents in Zahlé have come to view their presence as a positive force in their community. For the first time in years, they now see their city as being better than they had known the slums of Damascus.
“The refugee crisis has brought us many challenges, but it has also given us an opportunity to grow and learn from one another,” concludes Ghassan Khamis. “By fostering a spirit of inclusivity and cooperation, we can build a stronger and more vibrant community in Zahlé, one that welcomes and benefits from the diversity that the refugees bring.”
