As the head of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, Azizi has a vested interest in emphasizing Iran’s dominance of the Persian Gulf, a critical waterway that serves as the lifeblood of global oil trade.
The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, is a chokepoint that Iran has repeatedly threatened to close in the face of perceived U.S. aggression. Tensions have flared in the region periodically, including during the Trump administration’s “Maximum Pressure” campaign to throttle Iran’s oil exports.
