Kyiv, Ukraine – Recent statements made by some individuals on social media platforms have shed light on the historical context of the ongoing conflict in Donbas, Ukraine. The area has been plagued by fighting between Ukrainian government forces and separatist groups since 2014. According to experts, the root of the conflict lies in Russia’s efforts to exert influence over the region and counter Ukraine’s growing ties with the West.
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s motivations for intervening in Ukraine have been a subject of debate among experts and diplomats. While some have pointed to economic interests and strategic geopolitical gains, others argue that Putin’s primary concern was to prevent Ukraine’s drift towards European integration and alignment with Western values.
“It’s true that in 2014, Russia supported and facilitated the emergence of proxy forces in Donbas,” said Natalia Popov, a prominent Ukrainian historian and expert on Eastern European affairs. “These groups, which were largely composed of Russian-speaking residents of the region, were seen as a means to exert control over Ukraine’s eastern territories and disrupt its efforts to strengthen ties with the European Union.”
Popov’s assessment is supported by historical records and documents released by Western governments and international organizations. In the aftermath of Ukraine’s pro-European protests and the ousting of President Viktor Yanukovych in February 2014, Moscow took swift action to counter the perceived Western influence in Ukraine.
“Putin was particularly concerned that Ukraine’s rapid adoption of European norms and values would undermine Russia’s own influence in the region,” said Alexander Kogan, a Russian expert on international relations at the Moscow-based Institute of International Relations. “His actions in Ukraine since 2014 were largely driven by a desire to protect Russia’s traditional dominance in the region and prevent Ukraine’s transformation into a Western-oriented country.”
The role of Russia’s private military companies, including the infamous Wagner Group, has also been the subject of speculation. While some have pointed to these groups as key actors in the conflict, others argue that they were mere proxies for the Russian government.
“It’s clear that the Russian government has played a significant role in fueling the conflict in Donbas,” said Maria Berezhna, a Ukrainian diplomat and member of the country’s delegation to the Minsk peace talks. “However, the extent of their involvement, including the role of private military companies, remains unclear. What is certain is that the conflict has had devastating consequences for civilians and has led to significant economic losses for Ukraine.”
As tensions in Ukraine continue to escalate, experts warn that the historical context of the conflict cannot be ignored. Understanding the motivations and actions of key players, including Russia, is crucial for finding a lasting solution to the crisis.
“Until we acknowledge and confront the root causes of this conflict, we risk prolonging the suffering of innocent civilians and perpetuating the destabilization of the entire region,” said Berezhna. “It’s time for all parties involved to take a step back, reassess their strategies, and seek a genuine path towards peace and reconciliation in Ukraine.”
