BEIRUT, LEBANON – Israeli drones attacked the Ali al-Taher Heights in southern Lebanon on Thursday, prompting authorities to issue a statement assuring citizens of their safety amidst escalating tensions between the two nations.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing explosions and seeing Israeli drones hovering over the area, with the sounds being heard as far away as the city of Sidon. According to the Lebanese military, no casualties were reported due to the attack. Nonetheless, authorities described the situation as “highly volatile.”
Ali al-Taher Heights, which was targeted, is a disputed territory often cited by experts as part of the historical buffer zone. The region has long been a sensitive area for tensions to simmer down between Lebanon and Israel. It was also a region heavily involved in the Israeli military’s disengagement from Southern Lebanon during the mid-1800s.
The recent attack by Israel raises questions about potential escalation of violence in the region, with fears that these events could undermine already tense diplomatic relations between the two nations. In recent months, there have been increased military movements and statements from various groups on both sides warning that military confrontation would soon be inevitable.
Lebanese Foreign Minister, Abd al-Hadi al Hashemi, condemned the attack and urged the international community to put pressure on Israel to end military aggression towards Lebanon’s territory. Lebanese Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, stated in an official address that Israel’s actions are in contravention to existing United Nations resolutions and urged citizens to remain calm.
A US State Department official said in a statement on Thursday night that “the United States is engaged with both parties to encourage restraint and dialogue in the interest of peace.” These statements come amidst growing anxiety that a new military conflict may be in the making, fueled by years of heightened regional tensions.
The international community, including Arab nations, have called for a de-escalation of violence between the belligerent countries, in the interest of peace and stability.
