Tensions in the Middle East: Iran Proposes 14-Point Response to U.S. Mediation Bid via Pakistan

In a significant development in the long-standing conflict between the United States and Iran, Tehran has delivered a comprehensive 14-point proposal in response to Washington’s 9-point peace initiative. The proposal was handed over by Pakistani mediators, who have been working to ease tensions between the two nations.

At the heart of Iran’s proposal is a resolute push for a permanent and unconditional end to the conflict, rather than a temporary ceasefire or truce. This stance reflects a firm determination by Iranian authorities to address the root causes of the crisis within a strict 30-day timeframe.

According to sources close to the negotiations, the Iranian proposal includes several key demands. Firstly, Tehran has called for explicit guarantees against future military aggression by the United States. Iran is also seeking the withdrawal of U.S. military forces from the country’s periphery, effectively halting what it perceives as a threat to its national security.

Furthermore, the Iranian government has requested the lifting of the naval blockade imposed by Washington, as well as the release of frozen assets under U.S. control. Compensation for losses incurred during the conflict and the comprehensive lifting of economic sanctions against Iran also feature prominently in the proposal.

Additional demands seek to end hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon, as well as the establishment of a new mechanism for the secure passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil shipments.

The U.S. bid for a two-month truce, submitted via Pakistani mediators in recent weeks, had envisioned a limited, short-term halt in hostilities as a first step towards full-scale negotiations. However, Iran’s response has clearly signalled that it is willing to engage in negotiations but only on the basis of its own terms and within the timeframe it deems necessary.

Now that Tehran has made its proposals clear, it will be interesting to see how Washington responds. Iran has reportedly issued an official invitation to the United States to begin negotiations on the basis of their 14-point plan, leaving it to be seen how the U.S. reaction unfolds in the coming days.
