Tensions Rise as Hezbollah Supporters Protest US-Brokered Lebanon-Israel Agreement

Tensions escalated in Lebanon on Monday night as supporters of the Hezbollah militant group took to the streets of Beirut to demonstrate against the United States-brokered framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel. The agreement, aimed at resolving long-standing maritime border disputes, has been met with widespread condemnation from Hezbollah and its supporters, who view it as a “surrender deal” that compromises Lebanon’s sovereignty.

Protesters, many of whom were waving Hezbollah and Iranian flags, blocked several key roads in the capital city, including the Salim Salam route and routes leading to Beirut International Airport. The demonstrations quickly turned violent as protesters set fires, rode motorcycles through the streets of the southern suburb of Dahieh, and clashed with security forces.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and disorder, with protesters seemingly undeterred by the presence of Lebanese security forces. In some areas, tear gas was deployed in an effort to disperse the crowds, but this seemed to only fuel further anger and resentment towards the government.

Hezbollah, a powerful Shia Islamist group with strong ties to Iran, has long been at odds with Israel and has repeatedly vowed to resist any attempt to compromise Lebanon’s sovereignty. On Monday, the group’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, released a statement condemning the US-brokered agreement as a “betrayal” of Lebanon’s interests.

“We will not stand idly by while our country’s sovereignty is sold out to the enemy,” Nasrallah declared, urging his supporters to take to the streets and demonstrate against the agreement.

The US-brokered deal, which aims to resolve a decades-long dispute over Lebanon’s maritime border with Israel, has been met with mixed reactions from the international community. While some have hailed it as a major breakthrough in regional diplomacy, others have expressed concerns that the agreement cedes significant territory to Israel and undermines Lebanon’s sovereignty.

Lebanon’s government has faced intense pressure from Hezbollah and its ally, the Amal movement, to reject the agreement and instead pursue a more aggressive stance towards Israel. As tensions continue to rise, the situation in Lebanon remains highly unstable and volatile.

In a statement, the Lebanese security forces confirmed that they had deployed to maintain order and ensure public safety, but acknowledged that the situation remained fluid and subject to change.

“We urge residents to remain calm and to avoid any actions that could further escalate the situation,” the statement read.

As the situation in Lebanon continues to unfold, international observers are watching with growing concern. Will the agreement hold, or will tensions continue to rise? Only time will tell as the conflict rages on.
