Train Operator’s Joke Falls Flat as Derailed Cargo Train Causes Millions in Damages

A bizarre incident unfolded in a remote area of New Mexico, USA, when a train operator’s seemingly innocuous comment turned into a costly mishap. The operator, who wishes to remain anonymous, allegedly joked that pushing a derailed cargo train over a cliff “would be hilarious.” This light-hearted statement unfortunately had disastrous consequences, resulting in millions of dollars in damages and a lengthy investigation by local authorities.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred on a recent Tuesday evening, when a 2,000-foot-long cargo train carrying various goods derailed approximately 20 miles outside the town of Raton. The crew, consisting of two experienced operators, reported to have been en route to a major distribution center when the accident took place. Initial reports stated that the train was traveling at a normal speed, but unfortunately, one of the carriages lost control and derailed, causing a domino effect that brought down several more.

Following the incident, the anonymous train operator expressed himself to fellow crew members, commenting that if they “wanted to get their job done more efficiently” they could simply “push the whole thing” off the cliff, implying that the train would then be cleared from the path quickly. Though not meant seriously, these words sparked an ill-fated decision by one of his colleagues who mistakenly took his words literally.

The colleague, reportedly without any prior training or authorization, proceeded to attempt pushing the derailed train over the cliff, which proved disastrous. The massive structure, weighing over a million pounds, resisted the crew member’s attempts and instead, the whole operation resulted in the train careening out of control into a nearby ravine. Miraculously, there were no fatalities amongst crew members during the incident.

The estimated cost of the damages for the wrecked cargo train stands at more than $4.5 million. An investigation is currently underway to determine accountability and to identify safety protocols that might have prevented the disaster. Rail officials have confirmed that strict safety procedures were not followed, resulting in severe consequences. “There are no words to describe how reckless this decision was,” said the Director of Rail Operations.

The incident highlights the significance of maintaining safety standards and following regulations in such hazardous environments, where even the smallest breach can have devastating consequences.
