WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a surprise tweet yesterday evening, President Trump once again launched a scathing attack on former FBI Director James Comey, calling him a ‘Dirty Cop’ and questioning the credibility of his testimony.
The tweet, which was widely reported in the media, read: “Does anybody believe this guy??? A Dirty Cop!!!”. This is not the first time President Trump has made public comments criticizing Comey, who was fired by the President in May 2017 amidst controversy surrounding the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
The tweet appears to be in response to a recent interview in which Comey suggested that it was possible that special counsel Robert Mueller’s report may not have been made public because of concerns about the President’s reaction. Trump’s attorneys have since stated that the President had no involvement in suppressing the report.
The President’s criticism of Comey is consistent with his previous actions. In 2018, Trump testified before the House Judiciary and Oversight Committees, telling lawmakers that he had fired Comey because of the handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails during the 2016 election. At the time, Trump stated that Comey was a ‘bad guy’ who had ‘made a lot of bad decisions’.
Comey has consistently defended his actions as acting in the best interests of the FBI and the country. In the recent interview, he stated that he understood the controversy surrounding his actions but insisted that he had ‘always tried to do what was right’.
The renewed criticism comes at a time when Trump is facing increased scrutiny over the handling of classified presidential records. Earlier this month, the National Archives disclosed that it had discovered 15 boxes of documents from Trump’s time in office, which were not returned as previously stated. The discovery has sparked concerns about the President’s compliance with federal record-keeping laws.
While Trump’s attacks on Comey are likely to continue, Democratic lawmakers have expressed frustration with the President’s continued criticism of the former FBI director. “The President’s continued attacks on Mr. Comey are an attempt to distract from the serious issues that he faces,” said House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler in a statement.
As the controversy surrounding Trump’s handling of classified records continues, it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold. However, one thing is clear – the President’s relationship with Comey remains a contentious one.
