Trump Suggests China’s Mediation Led to Iran Talks

Former US President Donald Trump has indicated that he believes China played a key role in persuading Iran to engage in diplomatic talks with the United States. In an exclusive interview with AFP, Trump stated that he had been assured by Beijing that China had used its influence to encourage Iran to negotiate.

This assertion by Trump comes as the international community has been closely watching the developments in Iran’s relations with the world’s major powers, particularly the United States, following Iran’s decision to send a delegation to Vienna for talks with world powers. Iran and the US have been estranged for decades, with ongoing tensions primarily stemming from Iran’s nuclear program.

During his presidency, Trump was known for his hard-line stance against Iran, imposing economic sanctions and increasing military presence in the region. However, his successor, President Joe Biden, has opted for a more conciliatory approach, with diplomatic efforts aimed at reviving the multilateral nuclear agreement that Iran signed in 2015 but then withdrew from under Trump’s presidency.

Trump’s claim that China had intervened to facilitate talks between Iran and the US has sparked widespread interest. While the details of such mediation remain unclear, it appears that Trump’s administration had been in communication with Chinese officials regarding the matter.

“It was a long time in the making, and they had a lot to do with it,” Trump told AFP. “I think China was very helpful, very, very helpful.” However, it remains uncertain whether China has officially confirmed or denied its involvement.

The involvement of China in efforts to mediate the dispute between Iran and the US reflects the increasingly significant role that Beijing is playing in international affairs. As Washington’s relations with Tehran have continued to deteriorate, China has taken a more active role in promoting dialogue between the warring nations.

It remains to be seen how this new development affects the ongoing negotiations between Iran and the US. The Biden administration’s diplomatic efforts to revive the 2015 nuclear agreement have yet to yield tangible results, with significant disagreements remaining between the two sides.

The US Treasury Secretary, Janet Yellen, recently stated that progress in negotiations with Iran would require a consensus among all parties and warned that the negotiations must yield tangible results quickly. Meanwhile, Iran’s foreign minister has emphasized that negotiations would not resume unless the sanctions on Iran are lifted first.

In light of these developments, Trump’s assertion that China’s influence played a significant role in Iran’s decision to engage in talks may hold weight. However, only time will tell whether the diplomatic efforts can be sustained and eventually lead to a lasting resolution to the longstanding dispute between Iran and the US.
