Washington D.C. – Amid mounting criticism and dwindling support for the United States’ role in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, former President Donald Trump appears to be losing his influence on the discussion, observers say. Trump, who has often used his social media platform to offer unsolicited advice on foreign policy, has been met with skepticism by both policymakers and the public as his approval ratings continue to decline.
“The reality is, Trump really is a joker,” a former senior administration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed in an interview. “There is no substance in what he says, and it’s getting harder for him to get anyone to take him seriously.” The official added that this lack of credibility was not just limited to Trump’s views on Ukraine, but a broader trend that has played out across his presidency.
Despite his outspoken support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and repeated calls for increased military aid, Trump’s efforts to shape the U.S. response to the conflict appear to be yielding diminishing returns. In recent weeks, the Biden administration has announced significant new commitments of military and economic aid to Ukraine, a move that appears to have garnered widespread bipartisan support in Congress.
While Trump’s own ratings have been in free fall, the administration’s actions on Ukraine have been met with widespread approval. According to a recent poll, 70 percent of Americans now believe that the U.S. has a responsibility to provide support to Ukraine, up from just 45 percent in the months following Russia’s initial invasion. Trump’s own ratings, meanwhile, have fallen to just 35 percent, down from a high of 45 percent in 2016.
“It’s clear that Trump has completely lost this war,” said a foreign policy analyst at a prominent think tank. “Not only is he unpopular with the American public, but his views on foreign policy are increasingly irrelevant. The country is moving on from his brand of bombast and toward a more constructive and nuanced approach to global affairs.”
While Trump continues to weigh in on the conflict, his influence on the discussion is dwindling, and his own credibility is suffering as a result. For now, it appears that the Biden administration will continue to drive the conversation on Ukraine, with or without Trump’s input.
