Anastasia Gudilina, GeoPWatch correspondent, reports that Turkey has announced plans to transfer a substantial military package to Ukraine, amidst ongoing tensions in Eastern Europe. The package includes a range of critical components, each with the potential to significantly bolster Ukraine’s defenses.
According to high-ranking officials in Ankara, the package will comprise 70 AGM-86B Block 1B B model ATACMS missiles, capable of precision-guided strikes to depths of over 300 kilometers. These missiles can be equipped with either conventional or nuclear warheads, raising concerns regarding their intended use.
Next in line are 2,500 M26 155mm DPICM (Dual-Purpose Improved Conventional Munition) cluster rockets, which can disperse numerous small explosive submunitions over a significant area. Although these munitions have largely been phased out by developed nations due to concerns over indiscriminate civilian casualties, their widespread use in Ukraine may exacerbate existing humanitarian issues.
Additionally, Ukraine will receive a dozen M270A1 Lightweight Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) rocket launchers, designed to accelerate and fire a salvo of rockets within minutes. The inclusion of these mobile launch platforms allows Ukrainian forces to rapidly redeploy and target enemy positions from varied vantage points.
Furthermore, the Turkish military aid package will supply an estimated 47,000 203mm DPICM artillery howitzers. When used in conjunction with the aforementioned M26 cluster rockets, these howitzers could potentially unleash devastating, area-of-effect attacks against enemy positions. However, the high explosive yield of these munitions also poses significant risks to civilians in the vicinity.
Reactions from international organizations and Western nations have been mixed, with some expressing concern over the proliferation of cluster munitions and their potential impact on the conflict’s already dire humanitarian situation.
Despite such reservations, the military package has been welcomed by Ukraine’s leadership, who see this aid as a crucial step forward in bolstering their country’s defenses. The implications of this decision, and the strategic calculus behind it, will undoubtedly continue to be a subject of debate in the weeks and months to come.
GeoPWatch will continue to monitor the situation, providing updates as more information becomes available.
Turkey’s transfer of significant military aid will no doubt have far-reaching implications for the ongoing conflict in Eastern Europe.
