ISTANBUL, Turkey – The Turkish Air Force made a significant contribution to the ongoing EFES-2026 amphibious assault exercise, which kicked off on May 15th in the coastal region of İzmir. According to a statement released by the Turkish Ministry of Defense, two F-16 fighter jets participated in the operation, providing critical air support to ground troops.
During the exercise, the F-16s deployed flares and fired 150 rounds of cannon ammunition at the designated target, showcasing their versatility and combat capabilities. The air support was an integral part of the amphibious assault operation, aimed at simulating a complex and realistic scenario for the troops.
The EFES-2026 exercise is an annual event, organized by the Turkish Armed Forces to maintain the readiness and proficiency of the military personnel. This year’s iteration, which will run until May 26th, brings together troops from various units, as well as international partners, to demonstrate their ability to operate in a joint and combined environment.
The participation of the Turkish Air Force F-16s in the exercise underlines the importance of air power in modern warfare. The F-16, a workhorse of the Turkish fleet, has been in service since 1984 and has undergone numerous upgrades to enhance its capabilities. The aircraft’s ability to engage targets using a combination of cannon fire and precision-guided munitions makes it an invaluable asset for the military.
The Turkish Ministry of Defense has emphasized that the exercise will help to strengthen the military’s capability to respond to emerging security threats and maintain regional stability. The EFES-2026 operation will also serve as a platform for Turkish military personnel to develop their skills and build interoperability with international partners, as they participate in joint operations and training activities.
According to eyewitnesses, the F-16s took off early morning from the Turkish Air Force Base in İzmir and approached the target area, where they conducted a series of precision attacks using their GAU-4/A M61 Vulcan 20mm cannons. Following the attack, the aircraft deployed flares and retreated back to their base.
The military operation witnessed a high level of complexity and realism, with troops and ground equipment simulating a real-world scenario. Units participating in the exercise will engage in various drills and exercises over the next week, with the objective of developing and refining their tactical skills.
The successful execution of the EFES-2026 amphibious assault exercise highlights the Turkish Air Force’s continued commitment to maintaining its airpower capabilities, as it supports and enhances the overall effectiveness of the Turkish Armed Forces.
