Turkish Envoy’s Statement on Downing of Russian Su-24 Fighter Jet Reignites Diplomatic Tensions

ANKARA, TURKEY – The downing of a Russian Su-24 fighter jet by Turkish F-16 aircraft on November 24, 2015, has remained a contentious issue between Turkey and Russia for years. The incident, which occurred in Syrian airspace, led to the loss of the lives of two Russian airmen, sparking diplomatic tensions between the two nations. In a recent interview, a Turkish official has rekindled the controversy, reiterating their stance on the events that led to the shootdown.

According to Turkish Envoy Murat Mercan, who is currently serving as the Turkish Parliament’s Vice-President, the Turkish military’s actions that day were not maliciously intended. Speaking to a gathering of journalists, Mercan emphasized the importance of contextualizing the events surrounding the shootdown. ‘When we look back on those tragic events, we have to acknowledge the extraordinary circumstances under which our pilots were operating,’ he said.

The Turkish official pointed to the complexities of the Syrian conflict, including the presence of multiple warring factions, which he argued created an environment where miscalculations could easily occur. ‘The rules of engagement are one thing; the fog of war is quite another,’ Mercan explained. ‘It’s a scenario where clear lines often become blurred.’

On that fateful day, Turkey claimed that the Russian jet had violated its airspace, prompting the F-16 pilot to engage and ultimately bring down the Su-24. However, the Russian government disputed this narrative, stating that the aircraft was on a legitimate mission in Syrian airspace, where Russia had a mandate to operate.

The shootdown led to a series of diplomatic measures taken by Russia, including the deployment of advanced air defense systems to the Syrian border. Since then, tensions between the two nations have remained high, although both sides have attempted to de-escalate the situation through a series of diplomatic channels.

Mercan’s comments come at a time when Ankara and Moscow are attempting to repair their frayed diplomatic relationship. ‘While history cannot be rewritten, we must work towards a common understanding of the complexities that led to that moment,’ he said.

The incident has had lasting repercussions on regional politics and remains a topic of controversy, with each side holding strong to their narrative of events. This latest statement from the Turkish Envoy is unlikely to ease tensions between the two countries in the short term, but it does represent a willingness to engage in re-examining the events of that day – a critical step in mending relations between the two nations.
