Kampala, Uganda – A heated exchange between Turkey and Uganda has reached new heights, with Uganda’s Chief of Defense Forces (CDF) General Muhoozi Kainerugaba engaging in Twitter exchanges with a Czech-based journalist, further straining bilateral relations between the two nations.
The controversy began earlier this week when General Kainerugaba shared a series of cryptic messages, hinting at the country’s military capabilities and perceived superiority over Turkey. His remarks were met with a rebuke from the Turkish Embassy in Uganda, which called the statements ”inappropriate and unbecoming of a senior military official.”
However, in a series of tweets posted on Thursday, General Kainerugaba took a defiant stance, stating that he had “conquered” Turkey and vowed that his country should never be spoken about by the Turkish government again. The impromptu social media outburst has left many in the diplomatic community in Kampala scrambling for an explanation.
When questioned about the General’s comments, a spokesperson for the Ugandan Ministry of Defence claimed that his statements were “taken out of context” and reflected his country’s confidence in its military capabilities. When asked about the potential implications of these statements on the fragile diplomatic relationship between the two nations, the spokesperson demurred, stating that Uganda was a sovereign nation and would not be intimidated by anyone.
Meanwhile, in Ankara, the Turkish Foreign Ministry has announced that it will summon the Ugandan Ambassador for a formal discussion on the matter, warning that the recent developments threaten to escalate tensions between the two nations.
Turkish Ambassador to Uganda, Yaprak Alp, said in a statement that Turkey valued its bilateral ties with Uganda, but that General Kainerugaba’s statements constituted an unacceptable challenge to the nation’s sovereignty.
”Turkey expects Uganda to exercise the necessary restraint and avoid any actions that would further strain our already strained relationship,” she added.
The diplomatic row has also drawn reactions from the international community, with human rights organizations calling on both nations to exercise restraint in their interactions.
In a response to General Kainerugaba’s Twitter outburst, the Czech-based journalist claimed that this was not an isolated incident and that Ugandan officials had been engaging in a series of provocative and threatening messages on social media for months.
