Phnom Penh, Cambodia – In a significant move aimed at strengthening military cooperation between the two countries, Cambodian and U.S. military officials gathered in Phnom Penh to discuss the highly anticipated Angkor Sentinel 2027 exercise. The meeting marks a significant step forward in reviving a long-postponed joint military training program that was initially established in 2012 but has been dormant since 2016.
The talks, which were held between representatives from the U.S. Army Pacific, the Idaho Army National Guard, the Royal Cambodian Army, and Cambodia’s National Centre for Peacekeeping, aimed to finalize the logistics and modalities of the impending exercise. Sources close to the negotiations revealed that the Angkor Sentinel 2027 is expected to bring together military personnel from both countries to engage in joint capacity-building training exercises.
According to a statement released by the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh, the upcoming exercise is set to focus on a range of critical areas, including peacekeeping operations, disaster response, and medical support. By participating in the exercise, both U.S. and Cambodian military personnel will have the opportunity to share best practices and expertise, foster greater trust, and enhance overall regional security.
The resumption of the Angkor Sentinel exercise holds significant strategic implications for both countries. Cambodia has been actively pursuing its membership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Regional Forum, with a view to expanding its engagement with international partners in peacekeeping and regional stability.
Commenting on the exercise, a senior Cambodian military official stated: “This exercise is essential for us as it provides a critical platform for our military to engage with our U.S. counterparts, share experiences, and improve our operational capabilities.” The official also expressed hope that the exercise would “bolster” regional stability and support Cambodia’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its defense capabilities.
U.S. officials have also expressed optimism over the resumption of the exercise, citing its potential to deepen bilateral ties between the two countries. “We highly value the partnership with the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces and believe that the Angkor Sentinel 2027 exercise presents a great opportunity for both our countries to deepen our cooperation and contribute to the stability of the region,” a U.S. military spokesperson said.
The scheduled Angkor Sentinel 2027 exercise represents a significant leap forward in the U.S.-Cambodia defense cooperation, with far-reaching implications for regional security.
