Reuters reported on Wednesday that U.S. defense firm Anduril Industries is in advanced talks to acquire Nissan’s Oppama plant, situated near Tokyo, to manufacture military drones in Japan. The planned acquisition marks a significant development in the country’s efforts to bolster its defense sector, amidst growing concerns over a potential crisis in the Taiwan Strait.
According to sources within the company, Anduril Industries, led by Palmer Luckey, is eyeing the acquisition of the Nissan facility to establish a local hub for the production of its flagship drone technology. The acquisition, if successful, would enable the firm to expand its presence in Asia, particularly in Japan, where it sees significant growth opportunities.
Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has been keen to accelerate his country’s defense capabilities, with a focus on acquiring domestically developed military hardware. The proposed acquisition of the Oppama facility is in line with this objective, enabling Japan to become less reliant on foreign suppliers for its defense needs.
Anduril Industries, a prominent player in the U.S. defense sector, has already established itself as a leading developer of advanced military drone technology. The firm’s drones are designed to meet various operational requirements, including surveillance, reconnaissance, and targeting missions.
The Oppama facility, which Nissan abandoned in 2020 due to declining sales and shifting market trends, is an attractive proposition for Anduril Industries. The site spans over 1.7 million square meters and has a workforce with extensive manufacturing knowledge, making it a prime candidate for refurbishment and reintegration into military production.
In recent years, Japan has taken significant strides in bolstering its defense capabilities, which has been fueled by Beijing’s rapidly expanding influence in the Indo-Pacific region and concerns over a potential Taiwan Strait crisis. A military drone manufacturing hub in Japan would enable the country to respond more effectively to emerging threats and enhance its ability to contribute to regional security initiatives.
While Anduril Industries has expressed interest in the Oppama facility, Nissan, the former owner of the site, has not made any official statements confirming the sale. Nevertheless, the proposed acquisition, if successful, would mark a significant milestone for Japan’s defense sector, enabling it to establish itself as a major player in Asian military technology.
