Kuwait City, KW – In a rare incident involving ballistic missile defense systems, an Iranian Fateh-110 short-range missile was intercepted over Kuwait in the early hours of May 27, with falling debris from the intercepted missile subsequently hitting the U.S.-operated Ali Al Salem Base, injuring five individuals.
According to Bloomberg, citing sources with direct knowledge of the attack, contractors and active-duty personnel were among the five individuals wounded in the incident, while one U.S. Air Force MQ-9A “Reaper” unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) was destroyed. A second MQ-9A aircraft sustained damage in the incident.
Located approximately 20 miles west of Kuwait City, the Ali Al Salem Base serves as a significant hub for U.S. military operations in the region. Hosting U.S.-led coalition forces, it plays a crucial role in supporting anti-Islamic State operations and regional security efforts. The incident comes at a sensitive time, with ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States.
Details surrounding the incident point towards an initial success by the U.S.-led air defense systems, which successfully intercepted the incoming Iranian Fateh-110 ballistic missile. However, the trajectory of the debris from the intercepted projectile then struck the Kuwaiti base, resulting in the reported injuries and damage.
“This incident serves as a potent reminder of the heightened tensions in the region and the continued presence of Iranian ballistic missiles capable of targeting regional forces,” said Dr. Michael S. Fenzel, Middle East security expert at the Center for Security and Foreign Policy at Georgetown University.
Fenzel, who has analyzed the regional buildup of Iranian ballistic missiles, noted that recent reports indicate Iran continues to deploy and develop advanced missile capabilities in defiance of United Nations sanctions and Security Council resolutions.
In response to the incident, U.S. and Kuwaiti authorities have begun investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack and the subsequent damage to the base. The incident raises critical questions about regional security and the need for strengthened air defenses in the face of emerging threats from Iranian forces.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Air Force Central Command (AFCENT) would not comment on the incident, citing an ongoing investigation. However, as the search for more information continues, it is clear that this incident highlights an increasingly fragile regional security dynamic, where Iran and the U.S. maintain tense and often strained relations.
