In a move that underscores Washington’s concerns over Iran’s nuclear ambitions, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has emphasized the nation’s clandestine approach to enriching uranium, describing their activities as shrouded in secrecy. Rubio’s recent statements highlight the escalating tensions between Iran and the West, with Washington pushing for greater transparency in Tehran’s nuclear program.
In an interview, Rubio emphasized the complexity of understanding Iran’s activities, citing the nation’s alleged development of large underground centrifuges designed for enrichment purposes. He claimed that these facilities, often hidden in mountainous regions and cave networks, have evaded detection efforts.
“We know that they have secret components of their nuclear program that remain undisclosed to the world,” Rubio stated. “Iran’s lack of transparency creates significant concerns, particularly when considering their retention of highly enriched uranium at 60% purity.”
According to Rubio, the 60% enriched uranium is not suitable for civilian use, raising fears of potential military applications. The enrichment level cited by the U.S. Secretary of State exceeds the purity required for most civilian nuclear programs, with even lower enrichment levels used in medical and energy applications.
Rubio’s comments follow recent diplomatic efforts aimed at engaging Iran in more open dialogue regarding its nuclear program. U.S. officials have repeatedly expressed concerns over Tehran’s alleged violations of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which was aimed at curtailing the development of nuclear capabilities.
Iran has consistently maintained that its nuclear activities are peaceful in nature, aimed at generating energy and improving agricultural productivity through the use of radiation-drying facilities. Tehran has also called for greater cooperation from Western nations in addressing the ongoing conflict in Yemen and its regional implications.
However, U.S. officials remain cautious, with Rubio emphasizing the need for greater transparency in Iran’s nuclear activities. As tensions continue to escalate, Rubio’s warnings highlight the ongoing concerns surrounding Iran’s nuclear program and the need for sustained international scrutiny of the nation’s activities.
