UAE and Vietnam Explore Defence Technology Cooperation Opportunities

A senior UAE official has undertaken a high-level visit to Vietnam as part of efforts to strengthen defence ties between the two countries. Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Nasser Al Alawi, the Undersecretary of the UAE Ministry of Defence, recently visited the Viettel Group, a top Vietnam-based defence technology company.

During his visit, Lt. Gen. Al Alawi met with Col. Nguyen Vu Ha, the Deputy General Director of Viettel, to discuss a range of defence technologies and industrial cooperation opportunities between the UAE and Vietnam. The focus of their talks was on reviewing Viettel’s state-of-the-art defence systems, including communications, cybersecurity, and smart technology solutions.

The visit underscores the growing significance of defence cooperation between the UAE and Vietnam. The relationship is underpinned by a shared concern for regional stability, as well as a mutual interest in acquiring advanced defence technologies to enhance their respective militaries. Viettel is one of Vietnam’s most prominent defence technology companies, boasting a reputation for innovation and expertise in a range of areas, including satellite communications and information security.

Lt. Gen. Al Alawi’s visit also had an economic dimension, as it sought to explore opportunities for UAE companies to collaborate with Viettel in areas such as defence manufacturing and research and development. Such partnerships could create new business opportunities for UAE-based companies, while also enhancing the defence capabilities of both nations.

Col. Nguyen Vu Ha expressed his appreciation for Lt. Gen. Al Alawi’s visit, stating that Viettel “looks forward to collaborating with the UAE to promote the development of [Vietnam’s] defence industry.” This sentiment echoes the views of UAE defence officials, who have consistently highlighted the potential for strengthened military cooperation between the UAE and Vietnam in recent years.

For Vietnam, whose military has undergone rapid modernization in the past decade, cooperation with the UAE can provide access to cutting-edge defence technologies that would otherwise be beyond its reach. In turn, the UAE, which has played a prominent role in regional defence initiatives, can benefit from Viettel’s expertise in areas such as cybersecurity and satellite communications.

As Lt. Gen. Al Alawi’s visit to Viettel demonstrates, the UAE and Vietnam are committed to strengthening their defence ties, which is expected to have positive implications for regional stability and growth.
