Khartoum, Sudan – Footage has surfaced of Brigadier General al-Fateh Abdullah Idris, also known as Abu Lulu, a senior commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in El Fasher, Sudan. The emergence of the new footage has sparked fresh concerns over the involvement of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Sudan’s conflict.
Abu Lulu is widely recognized as one of the most prominent figures within the RSF, with deep connections to UAE-backed forces in the Sahel region. Despite being sanctioned in 2020 by the United States over his alleged involvement in war crimes, he has continued to wield significant influence over Sudanese politics.
According to sources close to the matter, a high-ranking RSF delegation led by Abu Lulu traveled to El Fasher, the administrative hub of North Darfur state, on Sunday. Eyewitness accounts reveal that the delegation arrived under heavy security escort, with Sudanese forces providing cover along major highways.
“It was a high-security operation,” said a local resident, who wished to remain anonymous for security reasons. “They took up positions around town, setting up command centers and deploying troops. We knew something big was happening.”
Experts have warned that this move could signal another escalation in the conflict that has ravaged Sudan since the RSF seized power in a military coup last year. With tensions remaining high between the RSF and rival Sudan Armed Forces, fears are growing that Abu Lulu’s involvement could further destabilize the fragile peace process.
Abu Lulu’s connections to the UAE have been well-documented, with reports suggesting that he has received training and funding from Emirati-backed security forces in the Sahel. These relationships have come under scrutiny in light of ongoing allegations that Abu Lulu’s forces have committed widespread human rights abuses in Sudan.
“We’ve seen a marked escalation of violence since Abu Lulu’s involvement,” said Emma Gordon, Senior Conflict Analyst at the International Crisis Group. “His presence in El Fasher only serves to heighten concerns that the UAE is backing these forces, directly contributing to the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Sudan.”
As Sudan teeters on the brink of chaos, diplomatic efforts are underway to negotiate a long-term peace deal. However, the emergence of Abu Lulu in El Fasher highlights the complex web of regional interests driving Sudan’s conflict.
In a statement to the press, the RSF confirmed Abu Lulu’s presence in El Fasher, while downplaying concerns over his involvement. Spokesmen for the UAE government have so far declined comment, fueling speculation over the UAE’s role in Sudan’s conflict.
The situation remains precarious, with many fearing that Abu Lulu’s involvement could yet prove a tipping point for the war-torn country.
