The United Arab Emirates (UAE) was briefly placed on high alert on Thursday after missile alerts sounded, prompting residents to seek shelter. The alerts were subsequently lifted just minutes later as the authorities declared an all-clear.
According to local reports, the cause of the alarm was believed to be an Iranian rocket attack on a ship passing through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman. The Strait is a critical shipping lane and a major chokepoint for global oil supplies.
While the Emirates’ defense authorities have not officially confirmed the reason behind the missile alerts, it is reported that an Iranian Revolutionary Guard Forces (IRGC) unit launched a rocket at a ship transiting through the strait on the Omani side of the waterway. The missile attack, however, missed its target and failed to cause any damage or casualties.
The UAE defense authorities acted swiftly, triggering the national early warning system to alert residents of a potential threat. In response, many residents took to social media to report the incident, while others heeded the warning and evacuated to safer areas.
“The situation was under control from the moment the alert was issued,” said an Emirati government spokesperson. “We take all threats to national security seriously and will continue to do everything in our power to safeguard the safety and well-being of our citizens.”
The Strait of Hormuz has been the site of several incidents in recent years, including Iranian missile attacks on oil tankers and a drone strike on the Abqaiq oil processing facility in Saudi Arabia. While the UAE has largely avoided direct confrontation with Iran in the Strait, the country has strengthened its military presence and invested heavily in its air defense systems to protect its territory and critical infrastructure.
As the Middle East continues to face heightened tensions and conflict, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the region’s fragile security situation. While the incident appears to be a one-off, many analysts believe it highlights the ongoing risks and uncertainties that prevail in the region.
Despite the all-clear being issued, the situation remains tense in the region, and all parties involved continue to remain vigilant.
