UAE Confirms Three Indians Injured in Iranian-Backed Attack on Fujairah Oil Hub

In a significant development that underscores the escalating tensions between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Iran, the UAE authorities have confirmed that an Iranian-backed attack on the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone on January 17 has resulted in injuries to three Indian nationals.

According to a statement released by the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the attack occurred when a drone allegedly belonging to an Iranian-backed entity targeted the Emirati coastal city of Fujairah, causing significant damage to several oil tanks and installations within the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone.

The ministry, while refraining from making a definitive attribution of responsibility, stated that the UAE is ‘determined to identify the perpetrators’ and ‘will take all necessary measures’ to ensure its national security and sovereignty.

The injured Indian nationals, who were employed by a private oil company operating within the zone, have been identified as Sajid Ansari, Rohit Kumar and Shubham Patel. According to preliminary reports, they sustained non-life-threatening injuries and have been receiving medical attention at a local hospital.

The incident marks yet another escalation in the growing animosity between the UAE and Iran, particularly in the aftermath of the January 17 attack, which has sparked widespread condemnation from the international community. The incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of the region’s critical infrastructure, particularly in the wake of recent aerial and maritime strikes attributed to Iranian-backed entities.

The UAE, a close ally of the United States and a key player in the Middle East’s energy industry, has been at the forefront of efforts to mitigate the tensions between Iran and its regional adversaries.

Speaking to reporters, a senior official from the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation emphasized the UAE’s commitment to international norms and law, stating that the country ‘reserves the right to take all necessary measures’ to protect its national sovereignty and security.

The Iranian government has thus far refused to comment on the incident, while the Indian government has issued a statement expressing deep concern and urging restraint from all parties involved.

As the diplomatic fallout from the incident continues to unfold, the UAE has called for a meeting of the United Nations Security Council to discuss the implications of the incident and to reiterate its commitment to upholding international norms and law.

With regional stability increasingly under threat, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the fragile security landscape of the Middle East, where rivalries and tensions between major powers continue to simmer just below the surface.
