A senior diplomat from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has hit out at Iran, accusing it of “bullying” its Gulf neighbours for decades. In a sharp rebuke, Anwar Gargash, the UAE’s advisor to the President, said recent events had exposed a loss of credibility between Tehran’s rhetoric and its actions.
In a speech that reflected the strained relationship between the UAE and Iran, Gargash declared that attempts by Tehran to control the Strait of Hormuz – a crucial waterway through which much of the world’s oil passes – or challenge Emirati maritime sovereignty were little more than “fragments of dreams.”
Gargash’s comments came as the UAE and its allies in the region appear to be taking a firmer stance against Iranian aggression. In recent months, there have been several high-profile incidents of Iranian involvement, including the attack on Saudi oil facilities and the seizure of a British-flagged tanker.
According to Gargash, rebuilding trust with Arab neighbours would require a commitment to “responsible language, safeguarding sovereignty, and genuine commitment to the principles of good neighbourliness.” He added that this commitment would need to be matched by concrete actions, rather than merely empty rhetoric.
The UAE has been a key player in efforts to ease tensions in the region and has played a leading role in several key initiatives aimed at reducing the risk of conflict. Gargash’s remarks are seen as a reflection of the growing frustration with Tehran among its Gulf neighbours.
The Emirati diplomat’s comments come at a time when the region is increasingly divided between two rival camps: Iran and its allies, and the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and their backers. The rivalry has been exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in Yemen, as well as the growing influence of rival powers, such as Turkey and Qatar.
Gargash’s statement marked a significant escalation in the ongoing dispute between the UAE and Iran. While Tehran has been accused of bullying its Gulf neighbours for decades, the Emirati diplomat’s comments have taken on a particularly sharp tone.
In a region where rhetoric is often carefully calibrated to avoid provoking a response, Gargash’s words have been seen as a bold and unequivocal statement of Emirati resolve. They also highlight the increasingly complex web of rivalries and alliances that now shapes the politics of the Gulf.
The UAE’s growing frustration with Iran is likely to have implications for regional stability and global energy supplies. As tensions between the UAE and Iran continue to escalate, attention is likely to focus on how the wider international community responds to Gargash’s provocative statement.
