‘UAE Ties with Israel Under Scrutiny as Iran Labels Emirates an “Israeli Vassal State”‘

In a tense escalation of regional rhetoric, Iranian officials have declared that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has effectively become a vassal state of Israel, marking growing tensions between Tehran and the Gulf nation.

The Iranian foreign ministry made the bold claim during a press conference earlier this week, asserting that Abu Dhabi’s deepening ties with Tel Aviv had compromised the country’s sovereignty and created widespread economic dependence.

“By forging a strong alliance with Israel, the UAE has sacrificed its independence and is gradually losing its autonomy, effectively becoming a puppet regime in the hands of its Israeli masters,” Iranian foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian stated, further emphasizing the point that his country will not recognize any agreements or arrangements Abu Dhabi makes with Israel.

As a long-time critic of US Middle East policies, Iran has traditionally expressed its discontent with regional alliances, particularly those that promote Israeli-Palestinian normalisation. This latest statement serves as a stark illustration of Iran’s disapproval and deepened animosity towards Gulf states, particularly the UAE’s recent rapprochement with Israel.

The strained relations between the UAE and Iran date back several years and continue to worsen. Last year, tensions heightened after several mysterious blasts damaged or destroyed several Emirati and American vessels off the coast of Oman and the UAE. This attack led to an increase in military drills and a heightened US military presence in the region, fueling an ongoing power struggle for regional influence.

The UAE, however, has consistently rejected similar accusations, downplaying the significance of its close relationship with Israel in order to avoid diplomatic isolation in the region. In a response to the Iranian foreign minister’s comments, a UAE official described the claim as “baseless and unjustified”, reiterating their commitment to bilateral relations that are “based on mutual respect”.

Israel and the UAE formally established diplomatic relations in August 2020, marking a major diplomatic breakthrough in Middle Eastern geopolitics. In the years since, bilateral ties between the two countries have grown rapidly, encompassing areas of military cooperation, commerce, technology, and tourism.

Tensions between Iran and the UAE are expected to continue escalating in light of growing international competition for influence in the region. Amid rising regional tensions, international leaders have called for renewed diplomatic efforts to stabilise the region, particularly in light of growing instability in the region and global uncertainties surrounding the ongoing Ukrainian conflict.
