UAE to Delay Full Recovery of Crucial Gas Processing Plant till 2027

A leading oil and gas production facility in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is expected to incur further delays in its recovery efforts, according to recent reports. The Habshan gas processing plant, operated by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), was severely damaged during a 2020 conflict involving neighboring Iran.

The Habshan plant is the largest gas processing plant in the UAE, accounting for a substantial share of the country’s natural gas output. However, the facility currently operates at a reduced capacity of around 60%, a far cry from its pre-conflict levels.

Although ADNOC has been making steady progress in its restoration efforts, the company now expects to only restore 80% of operations by the end of the year. Furthermore, the timeline for full recovery has been pushed back from an initial estimate to 2027.

In a statement to the Financial Times, a spokesperson for ADNOC emphasized that the company remains committed to its goal of complete restoration and is working diligently to expedite the process.

The damage inflicted on the Habshan plant in 2020 had significant repercussions for the UAE’s energy sector, impacting both domestic consumption and exports. The prolonged recovery timeline highlights the complexity of repairing such a critical infrastructure project, particularly one that suffered substantial damage.

Industry experts speculate that the delays may have far-reaching implications for the UAE’s plans to accelerate gas production and meet growing domestic demand. The country has been focusing on reducing its reliance on crude oil and shifting towards gas-based energy production in the coming years.

Experts attribute the delays to the intricacies involved in restoring high-tech infrastructure damaged in military conflicts, as well as potential logistical constraints arising from pandemic-related supply chain disruptions.

In the meantime, the partial operation of the Habshan plant is expected to maintain some level of gas production to meet essential domestic needs, although it falls considerably short of pre-conflict levels.

As the UAE continues to grapple with the challenges posed by the delayed recovery of the Habshan plant, analysts stress that the country’s broader strategic goals for the energy sector remain on track.
