A report emerging from Ukraine suggests that forces have adapted a domestically-manufactured ultralight aircraft, the Aeroprakt A-32, to serve as a mothership for supporting unmanned FPV (first-person view) interceptor drones in combat operations. This unconventional modification highlights the resourcefulness and flexibility of Ukrainian military units in the face of ongoing aggression from Russian forces.
The Aeroprakt A-32 is an ultra-lightweight, two-seat aircraft that is typically produced in relatively small quantities for recreational purposes. Its affordability, combined with its simplicity, has made it an attractive option for rapid conversion into a more complex system. By mounting up to six FPV drones under the aircraft’s wings, Ukraine’s military appears to be leveraging existing infrastructure to achieve a tactical advantage.
The deployment of drone-equipped motherships such as this Aeroprakt modification could significantly enhance reconnaissance and surveillance efforts, allowing ground units to gather real-time information on enemy movements and positions. Additionally, the FPV drones may be capable of conducting pinpoint strikes against targets identified by onboard sensors or human operators.
