Ukraine Claims Success in Destroying Russian Starlink-Jamming System

In a major development in the ongoing conflict, Ukraine has reportedly destroyed a Russian Volna Kupol Garant Starlink-jamming system near Gelendzhik, Krasnodar Krai. This system, valued at approximately $1.5 million, was designed to disrupt Starlink satellite internet services over a small area of approximately 20 square kilometers. According to sources, this is the third confirmed loss of this type of equipment, dealt a significant blow to Russia’s efforts to counter the US-based satellite internet company’s services.

The Volna Kupol Garant Starlink-jamming system operates by using powerful Ku-band uplink interference to temporarily disrupt Starlink services within its designated area of influence. However, its effectiveness is limited by the rapidly moving satellite network employed by Starlink. This network involves thousands of satellites orbiting the Earth at altitudes as low as 340 kilometers, making them extremely difficult to hit with a single electronic warfare system. Despite this, the Russian military had been relying on the Volna Kupol Garant to disable Starlink services and create a “dead zone” in areas under its control.

Moreover, the large footprint and strong emissions of the Volna Kupol Garant system make it relatively easy to detect and target. This vulnerability has enabled Ukrainian forces to pinpoint and destroy the system, thereby neutralizing its capabilities to disrupt Starlink services. By targeting this equipment, Ukraine has managed to minimize Russia’s ability to shut down Starlink coverage in key areas, thus maintaining a reliable means of communication and connectivity for its military and civilian populations.

The Russian military has been utilizing the Volna Kupol Garant system to counter Starlink’s services, particularly in the southern regions of Ukraine. However, with the destruction of this system, Russia’s ability to shut down Starlink in the Gelendzhik area has been severely compromised. This development is likely to impact Russia’s military operations in the region, as the loss of effective communication systems could hinder its ability to coordinate and execute military strategies.

As the conflict in Ukraine continues to escalate, the targeting of Russian electronic warfare equipment, such as the Volna Kupol Garant system, remains an important aspect of Ukraine’s military strategy. By disrupting Russia’s ability to control the information space and maintain effective communication networks, Ukraine is able to level the playing field and limit Russia’s ability to exert its military might.
