In a rare and significant instance of a foreign attack on Russian soil, Ukrainian forces have conducted a drone strike on military and industrial targets in the city of Taganrog, located in the Rostov region. The strike, carried out by an advanced FP-2 reconnaissance drone, has resulted in the destruction of significant military assets and a key industrial facility.
According to multiple eyewitness accounts and unverified footage, the drone strike targeted two Tu-142 long-range maritime patrol aircraft, which were parked at a repair facility in Taganrog. A video obtained by Ukrainian social media channels shows the initial hit on one of the Tu-142 aircraft, followed by confirmation of its destruction via a second drone. A second Tu-142 aircraft was also attacked, but no footage has emerged to confirm the aftermath of that strike. The Tu-142 is a modified version of the Tu-95 bomber, which has seen limited action in the ongoing conflict.
In addition to the aircraft strikes, a video obtained by Russian social media channels showed an Iskander-M launcher/missile carrier being destroyed near the city of Taganrog. This strike has been confirmed by Russian military sources, who have acknowledged the loss of the vehicle but have thus far made no statement on the potential origin of the attack.
Further footage has emerged showing the FP-2 drone striking oil tankers and oil storage facilities at the Port of Taganrog, as well as the Fedosia oil depot, which has been the site of repeated attacks in recent months. While the exact extent of the damage has not been confirmed, satellite imagery suggests that a significant portion of the oil storage facilities at the Fedosia depot remain intact.
The attack has been met with a mixture of surprise and concern from international observers, who had long considered the possibility of a Ukrainian attack on Russian soil unlikely. Analysts have speculated that the FP-2 drone may have been launched from a covert location in Ukraine, or potentially from a foreign location with the tacit approval of Kyiv.
The full extent and context of the attack remain unclear at this time, but it appears that Ukrainian forces are escalating their efforts to target Russian military and industrial assets in a bid to shift the balance of power in their favor. As the conflict continues to unfold, one thing is certain – the stakes have never been higher.
