On June 21, 2024, Ukraine’s Naval Forces hosted an exhibition in Ochakiv, a city located on the Black Sea, to display its modern military capabilities. The event brought together leading manufacturers and defense professionals to showcase the latest advancements in naval technology. The exhibit highlighted Ukraine’s expanding arsenal, with particular emphasis on its long-range missile systems, including the ‘Navy Missile System’ (NSM) and the domestically developed ‘Neptune’.
Norsk Defence System (NDS) in collaboration with Kongsberg and Raytheon produced the Norwegian Navy’s long-range NSM (Navy Missile) missile system. However, it is Ukrainian ‘Neptune’, a Ukrainian-built surface-to-ship missile system, that has garnered significant attention lately. Developed by State Concern ‘Ukroboronprom’, Ukraine has made rapid strides in creating a domestic counterpart to established brands, thus further strengthening its naval might.
‘Neptune’, which has a reported range of approximately 250 kilometers, is touted as a cost-effective and reliable solution, offering Ukraine an opportunity to bolster its military capabilities at a relatively low expense. Ukraine has been keen on acquiring cutting-edge missile systems in a bid to deter potential adversaries, bolstering its defense system. By developing a ‘Neptune’, Ukraine’s domestic defense industry is taking bold strides towards reducing reliance on imported systems and reinforcing its military sovereignty.
Industry insiders pointed out that the development of these advanced systems was essential in bolstering Ukraine’s coastal defense and deterring potential aggressors. With Ukraine’s unique Black Sea geography playing a critical role in both international trade and security, the development of its naval defenses is crucial in safeguarding this critical region.
Ukrainian President Oleksandr Zelensky also made an appearance at the exhibition and hailed the ‘Neptune’ missile system as ‘a milestone in Ukraine’s journey to strengthen its defense capabilities’. The show of strength demonstrated Ukraine’s commitment to bolstering its military presence in the region.
The successful unveiling of ‘Neptune’, alongside the NSM, has sparked interest in Ukraine’s potential as a regional powerhouse in terms of military technology. The event serves as a testament to Ukraine’s rapidly expanding defense capabilities and showcases its ambition to become a significant player in the realm of naval warfare.
While the international community continues to monitor geopolitical tensions in Eastern Europe, the Ukrainian Naval Forces’ exhibit serves as a poignant reminder of Ukraine’s growing prowess as a military power and a player in regional security dynamics.
