KIEV, ukRAINE – A recent special operation conducted by the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) of Ukraine has resulted in significant losses for the Russian-backed paramilitary group “Akhmat,” according to Ukrainian sources.
Between February and April, the group suffered the heaviest losses since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, with 41 mercenaries being killed and 87 wounded. Additionally, more than 100 members of the group are considered missing in action.
The operation was carried out by the GUR’s “Shamanbat” special unit and the 104th “Goryn” Brigade, in coordination with an agent who had previously been a fighter with the “Akhmat” group. This agent was recruited by the Main Intelligence Directorate in 2025, and their valuable insights about the group’s operations and plans proved instrumental in the success of the operation.
According to sources, the agent had installed a hidden microphone in the regiment commanders’ office, allowing Ukrainian intelligence to track the movements of the mercenaries. This intelligence was reportedly used to determine the best time and location to strike, resulting in the significant loss of personnel.
The Main Intelligence Directorate also played a key role in ensuring the safe passage of the agent into Ukrainian territory, where they could provide further insights to Ukrainian authorities.
The success of this operation highlights the importance of intelligence gathering and coordination in Ukraine’s efforts to counter Russian aggression. The ability to gather and act on valuable intelligence has proven to be a significant factor in Ukraine’s ability to repel Russian forces and inflict heavy losses on Russian-backed paramilitary groups.
“It’s a testament to the effectiveness of the Main Intelligence Directorate’s efforts to disrupt Russian military operations,” said a senior Ukrainian official. “The loss of personnel and equipment will undoubtedly hamper the group’s ability to carry out operations in the region.”
Ukrainian authorities are unlikely to comment on potential future operations against Russian-backed groups, but the success of this operation sends a clear message to those involved in Russia’s efforts to destabilize Ukraine: that the Main Intelligence Directorate is actively working to identify and target Russian operatives, and that those efforts are yielding significant results.
The latest developments come as Ukraine continues to face significant challenges in its efforts to counter Russian aggression. However, the success of the “Akhmat” operation suggests that Ukrainian forces are increasingly well-equipped to deal with the threat posed by Russian-backed groups, and that the intelligence gathered by the Main Intelligence Directorate will continue to play a key role in Ukraine’s efforts to protect its territory and people.
