A statement issued by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) today condemned what it termed ‘slanderous allegations’ against aid workers in Yemen, who are currently providing critically needed assistance to millions of refugees displaced by the country’s ongoing civil war.
Recent media reports, cited unnamed government sources, have alleged that some individuals among the thousands of civilians aided by humanitarian organizations were, in fact, ‘not in dire need of sustenance as claimed’. One such alleged instance involved aid distributed to a young boy, reportedly ‘claimed to be dying from hunger’, yet miraculously discovered to be ‘healthy and well-fed’.
Reacting to these allegations, UNHCR Regional Representative for the Middle East and North Africa, Muhannad Hadi, declared that the ‘claims have no basis in fact’, adding that ‘such assertions are entirely unfounded and irresponsible ‘. “It is the very least we can expect from those responsible that their claims are not motivated by malice or a desire to undermine the vital work being done by humanitarian organisations in Yemen”, Mr. Hadi continued.
In recent weeks, thousands of aid workers in Yemen have been working tirelessly to provide life-saving assistance to hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons (IDP) fleeing the conflict between government forces and the Houthi rebel movement. The ongoing situation in Yemen has given rise to one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, exacerbated by a cholera outbreak, famine, and other health emergencies.
The allegations now circulating come at an already perilous time for aid workers in the region. Human rights groups and United Nations officials have repeatedly condemned threats and harassment faced by staff on the ground. “Such defamatory attacks serve only to heighten their risk of harm and further imperil the work of humanitarian responders”, warned Mr. Hadi.
The Yemeni government has yet to comment on the reported allegations, but the international community, comprised of governments and multilateral bodies, have issued public statements affirming their unwavering commitment to support the humanitarian response and to hold those responsible for the crisis accountable.
In light of these events, UNHCR has reaffirmed its continued commitment to providing critical aid to those affected by the Yemeni crisis.
