Lebanon, April 11 – The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has condemned two separate incidents in which Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers rammed UNIFIL vehicles with a Merkava tank. The incidents occurred on the outskirts of Bayada, a southern Lebanese village that has seen a significant increase in military activity in recent weeks.
According to UNIFIL officials, the first incident occurred when IDF soldiers blocked a road that is used to access UNIFIL positions. The soldiers then proceeded to ram UNIFIL vehicles with a Merkava tank, inflicting significant damage. The second incident also involved IDF soldiers using a Merkava tank to ram UNIFIL vehicles.
In the past week alone, IDF soldiers have fired “warning shots” in the area, striking and damaging clearly identifiable UNIFIL vehicles. In one case, a “warning shot” landed just a metre away from a peacekeeper who had dismounted his vehicle. This reckless behavior by IDF soldiers is of grave concern to UNIFIL, which is mandated to establish and maintain peace and security in the area.
“The reckless behavior of IDF soldiers on more than one occasion in the past week is deeply troubling and poses a clear threat to the safety and security of UNIFIL peacekeepers,” said a UNIFIL spokesperson. “We call on the Government of Israel to take immediate action to investigate these incidents and ensure that they do not happen again.”
The United Nations has reiterated its commitment to the mission in Lebanon, which was established in 1978 to confirm the withdrawal of Israeli forces and restore international peace and security. The incidents involving IDF soldiers and UNIFIL vehicles are a stark reminder of the need for continued vigilance and cooperation to maintain peace and security in the region.
UNIFIL officials have called on the IDF to adhere to international humanitarian law and respect the mandate of the United Nations in the region. The mission has also stressed the importance of maintaining good relations with the Government of Israel, which has provided significant support to UNIFIL in the past.
The incidents involving IDF soldiers and UNIFIL vehicles are a setback for cooperation between the two parties, which has been steadily improving in recent years. The United Nations has urged all parties involved to exercise restraint and to work towards a peaceful resolution of the crisis.
As the United Nations continues to maintain its presence in Lebanon, it is clear that the road to peace and stability in the region will be a long and challenging one. The recent incidents involving IDF soldiers and UNIFIL vehicles are a reminder that the work of UNIFIL is far from over, and that the mission remains committed to its mandate of establishing and maintaining peace and security in the region.
