In a significant humanitarian development, a joint effort between United States and Pakistani authorities has resulted in the repatriation of 22 crew members of the Iranian-flagged vessel, M/V Touska. Captain Benjamin Hawkins, a spokesperson for the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), confirmed the successful repatriation operation on Wednesday.
According to Captain Hawkins, the crew members were transported to Pakistan, where they will subsequently return to their country of origin, Iran. This move comes following the interception of the M/V Touska by U.S. forces while attempting to breach the naval blockade imposed against Iran last month. Following the seizure, the vessel has been undergoing the process of being returned to its rightful owners.
Additionally, six passengers on board the M/V Touska were previously repatriated to a regional country last week, reportedly family members of some of the crew. These individuals were identified as having been accompanying the crew in transit.
The repatriation of the 22 crew members marks a significant cooperation between the United States, Pakistan, and Iran in addressing the humanitarian aspects of the situation. The operation highlights the importance of international cooperation in facilitating the return of citizens to their homelands, particularly in situations involving maritime conflicts.
Captain Hawkins commended the collaborative efforts, stating that the repatriation operation was carried out in full cooperation between U.S. forces and Pakistani authorities. The operation demonstrates a commitment from all parties to upholding the principles of humanitarian law and facilitating the safe return of individuals affected by maritime incidents.
This latest development also underscores the ongoing efforts to resolve the issue of the M/V Touska’s custody, with the U.S. forces currently in the process of transferring ownership of the vessel back to its original proprietors.
The repatriation of the 28 individuals brings a measure of relief to the crew members and their families, facilitating their return to Iran and reuniting them with loved ones. The operation serves as an example of international cooperation in addressing complex maritime issues while prioritizing the welfare and safety of individuals involved.
