US, Allies Conduct Joint Military Exercise Valiant Shield 2026 in Pacific Region

Washington D.C., June 22 – The United States Pacific Command (US Pacom) has commenced the Valiant Shield 2026 joint military exercise, a biennial training event that brings together military forces from the U.S., Japan, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. The exercise will run until July 1, with key operations taking place across the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, and Japan.

Led by the U.S. Navy, the exercise focuses on enhancing the collective defense capabilities and interoperability of participating nations. This year’s Valiant Shield marks a significant milestone, as it marks the first time a U.S. aircraft carrier, USS George Washington (CVN 73), will operate alongside Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) ships in the exercise.

Notably, Japan’s JS Kaga, an Izumo-class multi-function aircraft carrier, will participate in the exercise for the first time, showcasing the strengthened alliance between the two nations. Other participating JMSDF ships include JS Shimakaze, a helicopter destroyer, and JS Asahi, a destroyer equipped with advanced air defense capabilities.

According to USPacom officials, the exercise aims to integrate the air, land, sea, and cyber domains to ensure seamless coordination and effectiveness. Participants will engage in a range of military operations, including live-fire exercises, air-to-air combat drills, and amphibious assaults.

“Valiant Shield 2026 is a testament to the strong and lasting commitment of our partners to regional security and stability,” said USPacom Commander, in a statement. “Through these exercises, we can enhance our collective defense capabilities and demonstrate our shared commitment to the free and open Indo-Pacific.”

Australian Defence Force personnel, including F/A-18 Hornets, will also participate in the exercise, as part of the country’s contribution to the Valiant Shield. Canadian and New Zealand forces will provide logistical and communication support throughout the exercise.

This joint military exercise demonstrates the unwavering commitment of the participating nations to strengthen their collective defense capabilities and cooperation. By showcasing their combined capabilities and interoperability, USPacom and its allies are reaffirming their dedication to regional stability and security in the Indo-Pacific region.
