US Approves Potential $250 Million Sale for Boeing F/A-18 Support to Australia

In a significant development, the United States Department of State has approved a potential sale of training and related equipment worth $250 million to Australia to support Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Boeing F/A-18F Super Hornet and Boeing EA-18G Growler aircraft.

As per the approved sale, the Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) notified Congress of the planned sale, which is subject to approval from lawmakers in both the US Senate and House of Representatives. The proposed deal aims to enhance the interoperability of the RAAF’s aircraft with other key US military allies in the Indo-Pacific region.

The F/A-18F and EA-18G are advanced multirole fighter-jet variants employed by the RAAF for a range of missions, including air-to-air combat, ground attack, and electronic warfare. The training and equipment provided under the sale will be used to upgrade existing aircrew training facilities at the RAAF Base Williamtown, an advanced air combat training facility, and at the RAAF Base East Sale, a flight training facility in Victoria, Australia.

According to the DSCA’s notification to Congress, the proposed sale includes the provision of flight simulation trainer components, maintenance training equipment, technical data, publications, and support services to Australia. The sale would also see the transfer of equipment and services from US-based suppliers, including General Dynamics, Boeing Defence Australia, and Raytheon Missiles & Defense.

The decision to approve the $250 million sale marks another instance of the strong military cooperation between the United States and Australia. The proposed deal aligns with the strategic goals outlined in the US-Australia Defence Strategic Alliance, which aims to enhance security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

Australia’s Deputy Defence Minister, the Honourable Andrew Leigh MP, has highlighted the significant importance of the US-Australia partnership, underscoring its role in supporting regional security and stability.

Notably, this sale is the latest in a series of recent defence procurements involving the United States. In February 2023, US President Joe Biden announced a major arms deal with Australia worth approximately $1.3 billion for the transfer of 40 advanced MQ-4C Triton unmanned undersea vessels. The proposed F/A-18 sale underlines the continued strategic value of the US-Australia relationship in the face of emerging regional security challenges.

The US Congress will now examine the proposed sale to determine whether to approve or reject it. The outcome of this review will shape the future of the US-Australia military partnership and underscore the ongoing commitment to strengthening their bilateral relations.
